Interventions and Coping Skills

What Are Interventions?

Interventions are intentional actions, tools, or practices used to help manage stress, anxiety, depression, trauma responses, and overwhelming emotions. These are practical steps you can take to feel grounded, regain control, and continue your healing process.

Why Coping Skills Matter

  • Help manage emotions in the moment.

  • Reduce impulsive reactions.

  • Build resilience over time.

  • Support focus on personal goals while healing.

Intervention Examples

Grounding Techniques:

  • 5-4-3-2-1 Method: Name 5 things you see, 4 things you feel, 3 things you hear, 2 things you smell, 1 thing you taste.

  • Deep Breathing: Inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts.

Journaling:

  • Write down what happened, how you felt, and what you need right now.

Safe Space Visualization:

  • Picture a place where you feel calm, safe, and secure.

Positive Self-Talk:

  • Examples: "This moment will pass." "I am in control of my actions." "I am safe."

Reframing Thoughts:

  • Replace "I can't handle this" with "I can get through this one step at a time."

Coping Skills to Practice

  • Go for a 10-minute walk.

  • Listen to calming or uplifting music.

  • Call a trusted friend or support person.

  • Practice prayer or meditation.

  • Use muscle relaxation (tighten and release each muscle group).

When to Use These Skills

  • During high-stress, anger, or anxiety.

  • When negative thoughts or urges are strong.

  • After a conflict or triggering event.

  • When feeling disconnected or hopeless.

  • Before court dates, difficult conversations, or important meetings.
